Stonewall is a human rights charity[3] that supports LGBTQIA+ people and promotes equality and human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people. Historically, it has also lobbied for change within businesses and governments. The charity runs events and provides resources for the general public, workplaces, and schools. They also offer the people the chance to volunteer to participate in their work.[4]
History[]
Stonewall was initially launched in the UK as a response to Section 28, which as part of the Local Government Act prohibited the "promotion of homosexuality", For over 30 years, Stonewall have been helping create change for LGBTQIA+ people in the UK.[4] Created in 2001, the charity has a Diversity Champions programme that encourages employers to become members and receive support in making their workplace as inclusive as possible.[5] In recent years, a number of businesses have pulled out of the scheme, often offering criticism levelled at the charity regarding its response to transgender issues.[6][7][8]

Stonewall has been the center of several controversies, most notably those that focus on transgender issues. Despite being formed in 1989, it was only in 2015 that Stonewall created an advisory group to focus on helping transgender people.[9]
